Maundy Thursday Reflection
READING: John 18:1–27
He stands in the place of fear and vulnerability.
Maundy Thursday is a moment when everything changes.
Jesus is in the garden. It is night. There is a stillness about the place—a sense of quiet prayer. And then suddenly, everything shifts. Soldiers arrive. Torches flicker. Voices rise. What was peaceful becomes tense and uncertain.
It is the moment when the story turns.
And what is striking is this: Jesus does not hide.
He steps forward.
“I am he,” he says.
There is no panic. No attempt to escape. Just presence. A calm, steady willingness to face what is coming.
In that moment, we see something important about God. God does not step back from danger or suffering. God steps into it. Jesus places himself where the fear is sharpest.
And then, alongside this, we see Peter.
Peter, who loves Jesus deeply. Peter, who has promised loyalty. Peter, who wants to be brave.
But now we find him in a different place—in a courtyard, beside a small fire. It is cold. He is surrounded by strangers. And someone asks him a simple question: “Aren’t you one of his followers?”
And Peter says, “I am not.”
And he says it again. And again.
It is easy to judge Peter—but perhaps we shouldn’t be too quick. Because this is what fear can do. It creeps in quietly. It tightens its grip. It makes us unsure of ourselves. It makes us step back when we thought we would stand firm.
Peter is not wicked. He is human.
And Maundy Thursday is honest about that.
It shows us a night when courage falters.
A night when even love feels fragile.
A night when we see how easily fear can shape our words and actions.
But the heart of this story is not Peter’s failure. It is Jesus’ faithfulness.
Even as he is arrested, Jesus protects his friends.
“If you are looking for me, let these men go.”
Before the cross, before the trial, before anything else—Jesus places himself in their place.
He does not abandon them, even when they will abandon him.
And this matters, because it tells us something about how God is with us.
God is not with us only when we are strong, confident, or faithful.
God is with us when we are afraid.
When we get things wrong.
When we cannot live up to our own promises.
Maundy Thursday takes us to that place—the place where things feel uncertain, where we are not sure how we will respond, where we see both courage and fear within us.
And it tells us: Christ is already there.
He stands in the garden.
He stands in the courtyard.
He stands in the place of fear and vulnerability.
And he does not turn away.
So perhaps tonight we are invited not to pretend we are strong, but simply to be honest.
To bring before God the places where we feel afraid.
The places where we hesitate.
The moments when we are unsure of ourselves.
Because it is there—right there—that Christ meets us.
Not in our strength, but in our trembling.
Not in our certainty, but in our need.
And he stays with us.
Prayer
Lord Jesus,
on this holy night,
you stepped forward when others stepped back.
When fear rises in us,
when we feel uncertain or fragile,
stay close to us.
Help us not to hide from our weakness,
but to trust that you meet us there.
Teach us to rest in your presence,
to know that your love does not fail,
even when we do.
And give us courage,
not to be perfect,
but simply to remain with you.
